SMART Protocol — Multiple protective measures are used throughout the procedure to support your comfort and safety, as well as ours.

Safety Measures Throughout Your Treatment

SMART Protocol · Guided by IAOMT Standards

SMART stands for Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique, a protocol developed by the International Academy of Oral Medicine & Toxicology (IAOMT). Rather than relying on a single protective measure, it combines multiple safety practices designed to support a carefully managed amalgam removal procedure for patients, the clinical team, and the treatment environment.

We follow the SMART protocol alongside additional safety measures throughout every amalgam removal procedure. These include a dedicated air filtration system used during treatment, rubber dam isolation to protect the surrounding oral tissues, and activated charcoal provided as part of our post-treatment protocol. Together, these measures help support a carefully managed procedure from beginning to end.

Our clinical team is trained by Dr. Shanny Chang, a registered member of the IAOMT, and follows these established protocol guidelines with attention to detail, consistency, and patient-centered care.

What To Expect During Your Silver Filling Replacement

From preparation to restoration, here's what you can expect during your appointment.

01

Assessment and treatment planning

We'll begin by examining the tooth, reviewing your existing filling, and discussing your goals for treatment. Before we begin, we'll explain the procedure, answer your questions, and make sure you feel informed and comfortable moving forward.

02

Preparing the treatment area

Before the filling is removed, we'll carefully prepare the treatment area by placing a rubber dam and setting up the dedicated air filtration system. Once everything is in place, we'll confirm you're comfortable before moving on to the next step.

03

Careful amalgam removal

Once everything is in place, the amalgam filling is carefully removed following the SMART protocol and our additional clinical safety measures. Throughout the procedure, we'll monitor your comfort and can pause at any time if you need a break.

04

Tooth-coloured restoration

After the filling has been removed, the tooth is restored using a tooth-coloured, BPA and BPA derivative-free material. The restoration is carefully shaped and adjusted to fit comfortably while supporting the strength and function of your tooth.

05

Final check and home care

Before you leave, we'll check your bite, make any final adjustments if needed, and provide personalized aftercare instructions to help you care for your restored tooth at home.
